The fourth-seeded George Mason men's soccer team begins its quest for a second Atlantic 10 Championship ring on Thursday when it plays #5 Davidson in the first round of the conference tournament at 2 p.m. This will be the second meeting this season with Mason taking the first, 2-1 in overtime on October 25.
The Patriots and Wildcats both ended the regular season with a conference record of 4-2-2, however Mason received the higher seed as a virtue of its defeat of Davidson in the regular season. The match will be the second of the afternoon, kicking off at 2 p.m. with the winner advancing to Friday's semifinal match.
The two schools come into Thursday with nearly identical statistics. Both schools scored 28 goals, have allowed 14 goals and have nearly the same amount of points (80-78), assists (24-22) and saves (62-60) this season with Davidson narrowly leading in each category. The Patriots have recorded nine shutouts while Davidson has seven to its credit. Mason has slightly more shots than the Wildcats, 238-227.
Timi Mulgrew continues to shine in his senior season, ranking in the top-10 nationally in goals (T-3rd), points (7th) and game-winners (T-1st). Junior Michael Butts has played admirably since stepping in for the injured Steffen Kraus, posting a 2-0-1 record with a 0.46 GAA and one shutout.
