FAIRFAX, Va. - In his final home game as a Patriot, senior Timi Mulgrew gave the crowd one last goal to cheer about and was the difference in Mason's 1-0 victory over George Washington on Friday evening.
Mulgrew scored his 13th goal of the season in the 63rd minute after Henning Dirks found him open 10-yard out on the right side of the field. Mulgrew was able to juggle the ball and place a foot on it, sending it into the bottom left corner of the net for the 1-0 lead. The tally is his seventh game -winning goal of the season, currently the most in the country.
“It was a tale of two halves,” commented head coach Greg Andrulis. “We struggled to play at a high enough tempo during the first half. The second half was better and our pressure finally paid off with another game-winner by Timi Mulgrew.”
The first half was a defensive battle as the Patriots outshout George Washington 3-2 in the first 45 minutes. Mason's best chance of the half came in the 19th minute when off of a set piece Jannik Eckenrode tipped a ball with his foot that bounced off the crossbar and over the net.
The game went Mason's way in the second half as intensity increased, outshooting the Colonials 11-2 in the period 14-4 overall. Mason pressured with three shots spanning the 52nd to 56th minutes before Mulgrew came through to give Mason the lead. George Washington didn't record its first shot of the half until the 87th minute.
Goalkeeper Michael Butts recorded his first shutout of the season, stopping all four chances from the Colonials. He grabbed a header from Garrett Heine in the final minute of play to preserve the shutout, the ninth of the season for Mason. The Patriots end its home season with a record of 8-1.
“Our staff and team want to thank all of our supporters who came out tonight and during the regular season to support us,” added Andrulis.
