FAIRAX, Va. – With seconds left in the contest, the George Mason women's soccer team was inches away from tying the contest and forcing overtime, but the attempt fell short as Saint Joseph's secured a 1-0 victory on Halloween Night. Mason's seven seniors were recognized prior to the start of the contest.
Junior Megan Benitez looked for the equalizer with four seconds left on the clock as she attempted a shot from five-yards out, aiming for the back right corner of the net, but the shot hit the lower post. As the ball came back into play, senior Emily Harvey was in position to try to finish the play, but the shot went wide as time ran out.
For the contest, SJU outshot the Patriots 16-11, including an 8-5 shots on goal advantage. Goalkeeper Laura Glew came up with seven saves in the contest, while Allison Ebling made five stops. Senior Liz Hodges led the Patriots with three shots, putting two on frame in the game.
The Hawks got on the scoreboard in the seventh minute when Meghan Dipippa carried the ball from midfield and passed it off to Emily Gingrich. Gingrich found Olivia McEachern as the Hawk finished the play into the top left corner of the net past the hands of Glew. Mason saw several opportunities in the remainder of the game, but couldn't find the back of the net to tie the contest.
Prior to kickoff, Mason's honored its seven seniors for their contributions to the program before playing in their final home game of the regular season: Paige Babel, Emily Harvey, Liz Hodges, Karina Irizarry, Briana Kottler, Danielle O'Brien and Kelly Pizzingrilli.
