FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's swimming & diving team defeated Duquesne and the men's team currently leads Davidson after day one of the Richmond Duals in Richmond, Va.
The Patriots defeated Duquesne 174-105 and will race against Richmond on Saturday, who defeated Davidson 163.50-135.50 in the women's competition. Mason leads Davidson by the score of 116-88 and will conclude competition on Saturday.
The men and women had a combined 10 first place finishes on Friday, seven in the men's dual vs. Davidson. Freshman Steven Craig earned the victory in the 1650-yard freestyle in a time of 15:56.93 while fellow freshman Matthew Lynch touched the wall first in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:52.89, just ahead of Brandon Nestor in second (1:54.46). Freshman Alex Morin also came away a winner, claiming the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 47.30.
Senior Travis Lauri earned first place for the second consecutive weekend, winning the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 20.81. Fellow senior William Clendenin topped the field in the 200-yard IM with a time of 1:56.34 while Paul Helfgott won the men's 1-meter dive with a score of 240.10.
In the women's dual vs. Duquesne, the Patriots won the 200-yard medley relay (1:47.35) along with the men vs. Davidson (1:34.40). Steff Maurer continued her winning ways in the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:53.95 while also finishing second in the 100-yard freestyle.
Sydney Fisher won the women's 50-yard freestyle (23.97) and claimed second in the 100-yard butterfly (57.51.).
On Saturday, diving gets underway at 9:30 a.m. and the swimming gets started at 10:15 a.m.
