BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Atlantic 10 released its Preseason Poll on Tuesday in conjunction with its annual media day at Barclays Center. The poll, which is determined by a panel of the league's head coaches and media members, predicts that the George Mason men's basketball team will finish thirteenth out of fourteen league schools.
VCU, the 2013-14 Atlantic 10 Championship runners-up, were predicted to capture the league's title for the second straight year, garnering 28 first-place votes to total 392 points in the poll. George Washington, one of six A-10 teams to earn an NCAA bid last season, was tabbed second in the poll with 343 points, while Elite Eight participant Dayton was picked third with 339 points. For the second straight year, Massachusetts was picked fourth, followed by Richmond in fifth place.
Rhode Island was predicted to finish sixth, while La Salle was tabbed seventh and defending champion Saint Joseph's was chosen to finish eighth. Saint Louis appeared in the poll in ninth, followed by St. Bonaventure, Duquesne and first-year member Davidson. Mason was tabbed 13th, just two points behind Davidson, while Fordham completes the poll.
Mason returns two starters from last season in Marquise Moore and All-Rookie selection Jalen Jenkins, while bringing in a talented five-member incoming class. Jenkins returns as the team's leading rebounder from last season, averaging 6.0 rebounds per game, while Patrick Holloway returns as the team's leading scorer, averaging 8.7 points per game in Mason's inaugural A-10 season.
Also announced were the league's preseason all-conference teams. Making the First Team were Jordan Sibert of Dayton, Patricio Garino of George Washington, Richmond's Kendall Anthony, Saint Joseph's DeAndre' Bembry and VCU's Treveon Graham and Briante Weber.
The All-Conference Second Team is comprised of Dyshawn Pierre of Dayton, Kevin Larsen of George Washington, Jerrell Wright of La Salle, UMass's Cady Lelanne and E.C. Matthews from Rhode Island. The five players making the Preseason Third Team are Jon Severe of Fordham, Kethan Savage from George Washington, Steve Zack from La Salle, Gilvydas Biruta from Rhode Island and Youssou Ndoye from St. Bonaventure.
Garino and Zack also made the Preseason All-Defensive Team, along with Weber, Hassan Martin of Rhode Island and Alonzo Nelson-Ododa of Richmond.
