FAIRFAX, Va. – Dayton needed extra time but came away with a 3-2 victory Sunday afternoon over the George Mason women's soccer team at George Mason Stadium. Liz Hodges and Emma Starr both scored for the Patriots.
Hodges put the Patriots up 1-0 in the 61st minute converting a penalty kick just minutes before Starr scored her first goal of the season. In the 67th minute, Sydney Mitchell carried the ball down the near side and played a great ball to find Starr at the far post. The Patriot finished the play from two-yards out to give the Patriots a 2-0 advantage.
Twenty minutes later, Dayton got on the board with an Abby Weigel tally off a Nicolette Griesinger assist, cutting the score to 2-1. Less than two minutes later, the Flyers knotted the game at 2-all when Chelsea Rose slipped behind Mason's goalkeeper Laura Glew after Meghan Blank attempted to put it away first. The teams closed out regulation tied at 2-2.
Dayton opened the first overtime period with a shot from Ashley Campbell that went wide, but it was just a matter of minutes before the Flyers scored to capture the win. With Glew coming out to intercept the play, Kelsey Smigel found Nicole Waters who scored on an open net for the game-winner.
For the game, Dayton outshot the Patriots 17-11, including an 8-5 shots on goal edge. Glew made five saves in the contest as the Patriots pressured Dayton goalkeeper Elizabeth James into three saves. Starr led the Patriots with two shots on goal. With the loss, Mason dipped to 3-8-2 overall and 1-1-2 in Atlantic 10 Conference play. Dayton improved to 6-7-1 and 2-1 in league play.
Mason returns to action next Friday, October 17 at 7 p.m. welcoming Duquesne to George Mason Stadium.
