FAIRFAX, Va. – On a chilly and rainy Friday night, the George Mason women's soccer team captured its first Atlantic 10 Conference win of the season with a 2-1 triumph over Saint Louis. With her second goal of the season, Liz Hodges gave the Patriots the go-ahead tally in the 61st minute to move the Patriots to 1-0-2 in league play and 3-7-2 overall.
Both teams opened aggressively attacking in the first few minutes as both teams recorded a pair of shots on goal before the five minute mark. Niomi Serrano scored her first collegiate career goal coming in the 15th minute when the freshman collected a Sydney Mithcell cross from the near corner and punched it past the goalkeeper who came out to intercept the play and juggled the play. Mason carried the 1-0 lead for the next four minutes before Saint Louis knotted the score at 1-all with a fortunate goal from Cristina Rodriguez. Kirsten Clemens tapped it to Rodriguez on the far corner of the goal as the Billiken scored from two-yards out for the equalizer.
Sixteen minutes into the second half, Hodges would put the Patriots up 2-1 finding the back of the net in the 61st minute. After a carry down the field, Brenna Connell found Hodges on the left side and the Patriot was able to put it past the keeper from 15-yards out for what proved to be the game-winning goal. Although Saint Louis looked to even the score, strong defense from the Patriots and a key save from Laura Glew in the 71st minute kept the Billikens at bay despite a strong opportunity from Rodriguez in the 76th minute that hit off the side crossbar.
For the game, Saint Louis outshot the Patriots 15-12 and held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks. Both goalkeepers recorded six saves in the match as Mason came away with an 8-7 shots on goal advantage.
Mason returns to action welcoming Dayton on Sunday at 3 p.m. as part of a doubleheader with the George Mason men's soccer team which hosts Saint Louis at 1 p.m.
