Jannik Eckenrode's header in the 90th minute sent Friday's match with the Dayton Flyers into overtime, where it ended in a 1-1 draw after two extra periods in Dayton, Ohio.

"Tonight had a bit of everything. A saved PK, a last second goal, plenty of goal scoring chances," commented head coach Greg Andrulis. "We are proud of the comeback. It was an uphill climb with the weather conditions and a fiesty opponent. Dayton is well coached with a talented group of players."

Trailing 1-0 for the majority of the contest, Mason rattled off three shots in the 87th & 88th minutes, all of which were blocked before Dayton's Brian Bates was sent off with a red card, resulting in a penalty kick for sophomore Zach Herstek. Herstek's shot was saved by keeper Chris Froschauer in the 88th minute to preserve the Flyer lead at the moment.

With 12 second remaining, Eckenrode's header entered the net on assists from Brice Colcombe and Taylor Washington to force overtime. The goal was Eckenrode's second of the season and ended a two-game scoreless streak for the Patriots.

"The team showed a tremendous amount of character to stay determined and get the goal," said Andrulis. "Jannik Eckenrode's effort to score with 12 seconds left was tremendous. Very good ball served in by Taylor Washington and a quality redirection by Brice to set Jannik up for his diving header goal."

"The guys ability to stay positive after our PK was saved and get the tying goal is a good sign."

Mason fired five shots in the overtime periods with no attempts better than Noah Kemble's in the 105th minute where his shot with Dayton's keeper out of net went wide after a Flyer obstructed its path. Mason outshot Dayton 24-17 in the contest and also led in corner kicks, 11-6.

"Although we had numerous goal scoring chances with set pieces, corner kicks and shots, we were off in the attacking third. The good news is (we) are creating very good chances," continued Andrulis.

Dayton drew first blood in the 19th minute when Brian Richards headed a ball in off a corner kick to give the Flyers the early 1-0 lead. It would be the only goal allowed by Steffen Kraus, who made three saves in the game.

"Defensively again we had a good performance," said Andrulis. "Very few saves by Steffen, the guys did very good in front of him tonight."

Up next for the Patriots (7-2-3, 0-1-1) is No. 13 Saint Louis on Sunday, October 12. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m. at George Mason Stadium with the women's soccer game vs. Dayton following at 3 p.m.
