Box Score BALTIMORE, Md. - The George Mason women's volleyball team rallied from an early deficit and captured its first victory of the season, a 3-1 win at UMBC on Wednesday night.
Senior Lana Zonjic led the Patriots (1-3) offense with 13 kills, falling one dig short of a double-double while classmate Tori Price accomplished the feat with 41 assists, a match-high, along with 10 digs. Sophomore Morghan Martin led the team in that category with 14, while senior Laura Spencer slammed a match-best six blocks (one solo).
Hannah Schmidt led the Retrievers (1-3) with 17 kills, as the hosts were out-hit by a .184-to-.064 margin and outblocked, 11.5 to nine.
Mason grabbed the early lead in the first set but the Retrievers countered with a 6-2 run for their first advantage of the match at 9-8. In a set with a total of eight ties and four lead changes, UMBC took control with a 8-2 run to go up 22-17, and they held on to take the one-set lead.
The Retrievers found a quick start in the second with a 7-2 lead in the early going, but the Patriots rallied to tie the score at 11. Four in a row by UMBC put them back ahead, but it would be their largest lead and the Patriots kept the match close. UMBC led 23-22 and after a Patriots timeout, Mason pieced together three straight points to even the match.
It was the Patriots who led early in the third set, jumping out to a double-digit advantage at 17-6. The Green and Gold controlled throughout, allowing the Retrievers to get no closer than seven points for the duration as they took the 2-1 sets lead.
Once more, Mason found a hot start in the final set, storming out to a 12-3 lead. Again, their lead would not be threatened and the Patriots captured the victory.
Mason will return home this weekend, hosting the Patriot Invitational on Friday and Saturday at the RAC. The Green and Gold face Coppin State, Princeton, Radford and Temple over the two-day tournament.
