Box Score 2 COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The George Mason women's volleyball team split its two matches on the final day of the Maryland Invitational, falling in straight sets to the host Terrapins before a 3-1 victory over New Hampshire at Comcast Pavilion on Saturday. For her performance over the weekend, sophomore Morghan Martin was selected to the All-Tournament team.
The Patriots stand at 3-8 on the season with one more weekend of non-conference play ahead, as Mason travels to the UNCG Spartan Spiketacular next Friday and Saturday.
Maryland 3, George Mason 0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-12)
Martin led the Patriots with 10 kills while senior Tori Price had 19 assists in the loss to the Terps. Sophomore Bernetta Moore registered a match-high 11 digs, while classmate Lolade Owokoniran tied the match high with four blocks.
Ashleigh Crutcher and Adreene Elliott posted double-digit kills to pace the Terps with 12 and 10, respectively.
Mason's offense faltered in the match, hitting -.037 compared to a .231 clip for the Terrapins. Maryland jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the opening set and never trailed until the Patriots scored four straight to take a 19-18 lead. It stayed a one point game until a pair of scores by Maryland gave them a set-point opportunity at 24-22. Martin responded with a kill, but a Mary Cushman kill gave UMD the set.
Maryland took control of the second set with a 9-1 run to take a 19-9 lead, and the Patriots did not threaten again in the set. It was a back-and-forth contest in the third's early moments, with Mason holding an 8-6 lead. The Terps answered with a 10-2 run to go up 16-10, and Mason would get no closer than five as Maryland captured the victory.
George Mason 3, New Hampshire 1 (16-25, 25-20, 31-29, 25-13)
Mason rallied from an early deficit to knock off the Wildcats behind another strong offensive output from Martin, who tied the match-high with 14 kills. Moore registered 26 digs, a match-high, while Price also had a match-best with 43 assists. Demi Muses and Morgan Thatcher led UNH with 14 and 13 kills each.
New Hampshire broke open a 5-5 tie in the first set with a 9-1 run, part of a larger run which saw them take a double-digit lead at 20-10. Mason got to within eight but the Wildcats were too much in the first.
Mason jumped out to a 8-3 lead in the second set and never trailed in the frame, leading by as many as six points and on their second set point attempt, Martin slammed a kill on a feed from Price as the Patriots equalized the match.
UNH jumped out to a 7-3 run in the third set but the Patriots battled back, tying the score at 15. The Wildcats pushed out to a three point lead and were up 24-21, but the Patriots tied the score with three straight.
Moving to extra points, Jessie Greenslade slammed a kill combined with a UNH error made it 2-1 in the match. The Patriots never trailed in the final set, leading 4-1 out of the whistle and hitting .300, their best offensive performance of the match.
