WASHINGTON, D.C. – The George Mason women's soccer team put three shots on goal Tuesday afternoon, but could not convert, dropping a 1-0 decision at American University. Mason dropped to 1-3-1 on the season, while American improved to 2-4.
Liz Hodges put all three shots on frame for the Patriots, two coming in the first half as the teams stood scoreless at intermission. Hodges threatened in just the sixth minute of play, forcing Charlene Belanger into the first save of the afternoon. The junior placed her second shot on target in the 16th minute as Mason goalkeeper Lyndse Hokanson kept the Eagles off the scoreboard with one save in the first half coming in the 32nd minute.
American came out strong in the second half and after three shots on frame, broke through with the lone goal of the contest coming in the 74th minute. Marley Jennings gave American the 1-0 lead, which proved to be the game-winning goal.
For the contest, Mason took 10 shots to American's 13 as Hokanson recorded four saves in the contest. Belanger was forced to make three saves for American. Hodges led Mason with four shots, three on target, while both Jazmin Cardoso and Emma Starr recorded two shots apiece.
After closing out this two-game road swing, Mason returns to action in Fairfax on Saturday, September 14 welcoming former conference foe Old Dominion at 7 p.m.
