COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Facing its first nationally-ranked opponent of the season, the George Mason women's soccer team dropped a hard-fought 3-0 decision Friday night at No. 15 Maryland. With the loss, Mason dropped to 0-1-1 on the season, while Maryland improved to 3-0.
Nearly everyone took the pitch for Mason in the game as Jazmin Cardoso, Nicole Clark and Emma Starr each posted shots for the visiting squad. Cardoso and Clark tallied Mason's two shots on goal. The Terrapins outshot Mason 22-3 in the contest. Lyndse Hokanson earned the start in net and registered four saves in the contest. Briana Kottler played the second half, making two stops.
Riley Barger handed Maryland the early 1-0 lead finishing a Hayley Brock and Shannon Collins double-assist in just the second minute. As Hokanson came out to make a stop, Barger received the cross from the left side and finished the play on an open net. Maryland doubled its lead, which proved to be the halftime score, in the seventh minute. Brock registered the second goal for the Terrapins, putting a Lauren Berman pass into the lower right corner of the net for a 2-0 advantage.
Mason held Maryland scoreless over the next 73 minutes until Berman scored her second goal of the season for the final 3-0 score. Berman scored off a free kick on a double-assist by Cory Ryan and Collins.
“Tonight we saw that it is very hard to replicate the training environment of what we saw in the game tonight,” commented head coach Diane Drake. “This is a very athletic and composed Maryland team. We got stronger as the game went on and got to play a lot of players in order to gain experience against a top-15 program. We will regroup for Sunday and be ready to compete.”
Mason opens its home slate on Sunday, September 1 welcoming North Florida to George Mason Stadium. Game time is slated for 1 p.m.
