Box Score FAIRFAX, Va. – Three Patriots posted double-doubles, but the George Mason women's volleyball team could not force a fifth set as they fell to visiting Georgetown, 3-1, on Friday night in their season opener at the RAC.
Hosting the opening day of the D.C. Volleyball Challenge, Mason (0-1) was led by 17 kills and 13 digs from senior Lana Zonjic, while freshman Jessie Greenslade added 11 digs and 10 kills, along with a match-high four aces, in her collegiate debut. Senior Tori Price posted 42 assists and 10 digs, while sophomore Bernetta Moore led the team in digs with 16. The Hoyas (1-0) were led by 19 kills from Alex Johnson, one of three GU players to reach double-digit scoring.
The Patriots never captured the lead in the first set as Georgetown jumped out to a 4-1 lead. Mason tied the score on four occasions but could not retake the advantage, and the Hoyas used a 9-1 run to take their largest lead at 19-11. Mason battled back to within a point at 24-23, but a Dani White kill gave the Hoyas the first set win. Zonjic had six of her kills in the set while redshirt sophomore Lolade Owokoniran posted five block assists.
In set two it was another quick start for the visitors, but the Patriots ralled from a 4-1 deficit with a 9-3 run to take a 10-7 lead. They would not trail again until 16-15, the end of a 5-1 run by the Hoyas. The set stayed within two points until Laura Spencer's kill put Mason on top, 23-20, and kills by Zonjic and Greenslade evened up the match at one set apiece. The freshman Greenslade had five of her kills along with a pair of aces in the second set.
Set three was taken by the Hoyas after they pulled away from an 11-11 game with eight of the next nine points. Mason got no closer than three points from then on, despite its best hitting of the match at .281 and another five-kill, two-ace frame by Greenslade.
The fourth set stayed close until an 8-3 Hoyas run put them on top for good. Mason closed to three points at 20-17, but GU held on to take the win. Zonjic contributed six kills on .545 hitting in the final set.
Mason is back in action tomorrow, crossing the Potomac for day two of the tournament at American. The Patriots face Howard at 1 p.m., before squaring off against the host Eagles at 7 p.m. at Bender Arena. AU defeated Howard in straight sets earlier in the evening to commence tournament play.
