The No. 66 George Washington men's tennis team defeated local foe George Mason, 6-1, on Saturday afternoon at the GW Tennis Center on the Mount Vernon Campus. The last time the Colonials (10-5) and the Patriots (9-5) met was during the 2002 season when GW blanked Mason, 7-0.
The Buff and Blue opened the match with a doubles sweep. The No. 1 tandem of junior Ulrik Thomsen and senior Alexander van Gils downed Mason's Tanner Baine and Taylor Sargent, 8-4, and the No. 2 duo of junior Nikita Fomin and freshman Danil Zelenkov defeated Jimmy Davis and Scott Keaton, 9-7. Fresh off its No. 80 national ranking, the No. 3 team of sophomore Francisco Dias and senior Leonardo Lapentti earned an 8-5 decision over Christopher Borden and Jordan Dyke.
In the No. 6 singles match, freshman Aaron Capitel earned the Patriots lone point after defeating Viktor Svensson, 6-4, 6-4. In No. 1 singles play, Jordan Dyke took the first set to Fomin, 6-2, but the next two sets by 6-1, 10-7 scores.
