NEWARK, Del. - Freshman Marko Gujanicic had a career-high 21 points, but the
University of Delaware hit a 3-pointer with 39 seconds remaining to take the
lead for good, holding off the George Mason men's basketball team on Saturday
afternoon, 82-77, at the Bob Carpenter Center. Mason wraps up the regular
season with a 10-8 mark in Colonial Athletic Association play and 17-13 record,
while the Blue Hens improved to 13-5 in league play and 18-13 overall.
The Patriots have earned the No. 4 seed in next week's CAA Championship, and will face fifth-seeded Drexel on Saturday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. at Richmond Coliseum.
Gujanicic led the Patriots on 8-of-14 shooting, including a
4-for-5 mark from beyond the arc. Junior Sherrod Wright scored 20 points, while
classmate Vertrail Vaughns added a season-high 16 points. Devon Saddler led a
quartet of double-digit scorers for UD with 22 points while Jamelle Hagins
added 14 rebounds and 13 points.
Mason jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the first two and a half
minutes of play, but the Blue Hens would take a lead as large as seven points.
Kyle Anderson hit a 3-pointer with 9:29 left in the first half, capping an 8-0
UD run and making the score 23-16. Mason answered, responding to a 25-20
deficit with an 8-2 run, ending with a Wright 3-pointer that left the score
28-27.
For the rest of the period, it was a back-and-forth game
with the largest lead being four for Delaware, before Vaughns's 3-pointer with
under 30 seconds left made it 41-39 in favor of the Patriots. Anderson was
fouled in the final second of play and hit both of his free throws to tie the
score at 41 at the half.
Wright had 18 points to lead all scorers in the opening half
while Delaware, which shot 58 percent compared to a 45 percent clip for Mason,
was led by Saddler's 13 points.
Into the second half, UD jumped out to a 48-43 lead before
Gujanicic's trey tied the score at 48. It was part of a 14-0 run that concluded
with a pair of Vaughns free throws at
the 12:05 mark, putting the Patriots on top 57-48. Delaware was held off the
scoreboard for more than six minutes, and a Vaughns 3-pointer at the 9:12 mark
gave Mason it's alargest lead of 62-52.
Delaware chipped away at the lead, and with 1:22 remaining,
Jarvis Threatt hit a pair from the stripe to tie the score at 74. 40 seconds
later, Threatt sank a 3-pointer that put the Blue Hens up for good, as he hit
two more free throws to make it 79-74. Gujanicic hit a 3-pointer with 11
seconds remaining to cut the deficit to 80-77, but UD was able to get the ball
inbounded after a timeout and Threatt' who was 13-of-14 at the line, sank two
more free throws to seal the outcome.
