RICHMOND, Va. - The George Mason track and field team opened its 2013 outdoor season with a sound performance at the VCU Rams Invitational on Saturday at Sports Backers Stadium in Richmond.
The men and women won a combined five events, had 29 athletes place and set 25 personal records in addition to three ECAC qualifying marks on the day.
Finishing with an ECAC qualifying mark for the women was junior Dominique Graham, winning the high jump with a PR of 1.70m, the fifth-best height in program history. The other ECAC qualifier was the 4x400m relay of seniors Cierra McGee and Taylor Wheaton, sophomore Aneesha Scott and junior Shavon Briscoe won the event in 3:48.24.
Mason swept the top five spots in the women's pole vault, as Marshall's winning height was followed by sophomores Summer Shepherd (3.45m) and Megann Kaiser (3.30m), freshman Lindsay Horton (3.30m) and sophomore Caitlin Eberly (3.15m). Kaiser, Horton and Eberly all finished with PR's. Another strong showing for the Patriots came in the 200m as McGee, Briscoe and sophomore Jasmine Robinson finished 2-3-4 in the event, crossing the finish line in 24.98, 25.11 and 25.54, respectively.
On the men's side, senior Parker Boudreau won the 1500m in 3:59.04, while freshman Sean Daugherty took the top spot in the pole vault with a PR of 4.65m. Daugherty's performance led a sweep of the top three spots in the event for Mason, as seniors Wes Sun (4.50) and Josh Trikakis (4.35m) trailed.
The Patriots return to action next weekend in split squad action, traveling to the William and Mary Tribe Open and VMI Invitational on Saturday.
