After being selected in the MLS Supplemental Draft in January, former George Mason men's soccer standout Taylor Morgan has earned a chance to compete in the professional ranks. Morgan signed a contract with Toronto FC on Friday, after being selected by the club in the fourth round.
Drafted in the fourth round of the MLS Supplemental Draft
(58th pick), Morgan was the first Mason player drafted since 2009
when forward Kwame Adjeman-Pamboe was selected by the Colorado Rapids in the
second round of the MLS SuperDraft.
“We're excited to add this young talent to our group at Toronto FC,”
said Toronto FC President and General Manager Kevin Payne. “Each of
these players earned their spot in preseason and we look forward to each
contributing to a successful season.”
"Taylor has worked incredibly hard for this moment, and put himself in a
position to make it at the next level," said Mason Head Coach Greg Andrulis in January upon Morgan's selection. "His athleticism, professionalism
and character is something that is desirable as a professional athlete.
He was one of the top forwards in college soccer last season, now he
gets to compete for a spot at the highest level. The Mason soccer family
is thrilled for Taylor and his family on a day when goals and dreams
are realized."
An All-CAA First Team selection in 2012, Morgan started all
19 matches for the Patriots, finishing the season with a team and league-best
13 goals, a single-season personal best. He recorded three two-goal matches on
the season, achieving the feat in wins over St. Francis (N.Y.), Towson and
Delaware. Morgan was named the CAA Men's Soccer Player of the Week on October
29 after registering two goals in a 2-0 win at Delaware on October 24 before
leading the team with five shots in a 0-0 double-overtime draw at Northeastern.
For his career the Southampton, England native appeared in
50 matches with 48 starts, racking up 53 points on 23 goals and seven assists
over three seasons.
