BETHESDA, Md. - One day after being named the CAA Player of
the Week junior Tucker Tobin continued his hot hitting, going 3-for-5 and
bringing in three of Mason's four runs as the Patriots defeated Georgetown, 4-1,
on Wednesday afternoon at Shirley Povich Field.
With the win, Mason improved to 4-3 overall, while
Georgetown dropped to 2-3. In a staff day for the Patriots, Nick Kendrick earned his first win of the season and sophomore John Williams picked up his
first save. GU starter Thomas Polus took the loss.
The Patriots wasted no time putting runs on the scoreboard,
as senior Nick Allen and junior Blaise Fernandez both walked to leave runners
on for Tobin, who ripped an RBI single to left field for the first Patriot run
of the game in the top of the first.
Georgetown responded in the home half of the inning to tie
the game at 1-1. With two on and two out, Christian Venditti singled to left
center to bring in the run.
Fernandez reached base for the second time in the game with
a single in the third and Tobin followed, delivering his third home run of the
season deep to left field to push the Patriots back into the lead, 3-1.
One inning later Mason loaded the bases with two out for Josh
Leemhuis, and he came through with an RBI single down the left field line,
extending the lead to 4-1.
Georgetown loaded the bases with one out in the ninth, but
Williams worked out of the jam to give Mason its fourth-consecutive win.
Tobin was the lone multi-hit player for the Patriots, with
five other batters recording one hit. Justin Leeson paced GU with a 3-for-4
performance, and Venditti finished 2-for-5.
The Patriots return to action on Friday, hosting Fairfield
in a weekend series at Spuhler Field.
