The George Mason Women's basketball team dropped a 90-83 overtime decision at Delaware State Wednesday evening, falling to 5-4 on the season.
“I'm very, very disappointed how this one ended,” head coach Nyla Milleson said. “But we're learning and going in the right direction, I truly believe that.
The Patriots led 68-57 with as little as 1:30 remaining in the second half, but couldn't stop the Hornets beyond the arc down the stretch allowing three unanswered treys to bring the game to 73-72, Mason. Patriot sophomore Taylor Brown would hit the front end of a one-and-one opportunity, putting Mason up 74-72 with 45 seconds remaining but, DSU's Deanna Harmon tied the game at 74-74 with a layup on the other with 25 seconds to go. Brown, who would finish the night with a team-high 20 points and eight assists, missed a contested three as time expired sending the game into overtime.
“We just panicked,” Milleson said. “We set something up and if doesn't go exactly the right way, we just aren't seasoned enough to make the next read.”
Mason started overtime strong with a block and steal from senior Cierra Strickland leading to two free throws. However, the Hornets would go on to outscore the Patriots 16-9 in overtime, going 8-for-9 from the charity stripe to walk away with the win.
As a team, Mason outrebounded the Hornets 46-45 while shooting just under 45-percent from the field. Junior Sandra Ngoie contributed 18 points in 20 minutes off the bench, while seniors Cierra Strickland and Kyana Jacobs each registered 10 in the losing effort.
Next up the Patriots will head to Ohio to take on Akron Saturday, Dec. 7 at 2:00 P.M. Stay tuned to GoMason.com for details leading up to the game.
