HONOLULU, Hawai'i – The George Mason men's basketball team lead by four at the final media timeout, but Oregon State outscored the Patriots 14-6 over the final minutes to take the decision 58-54 in the second round of the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic.
Bryon Allen fueled Mason's offense with a team-best 15 points as Patrick Holloway followed his career-high 19 point performance yesterday with 12 points on four treys today. Mason won the battle on the glass, 37-28, led by Jalen Jenkins' eight rebounds. Jenkins pulled down four of Mason's 11 offensive rebounds. Roberto Nelson led Oregon State with 17 points as Devon Collier contributed 15 to the effort. OSU capitalized on 15 Mason turnovers, converting the miscues into 19 points.
It was a back-and-forth affair to open the second half before the Patriots grabbed a four-point lead following an Allen jumper at 3:38 for a 48-44 ballgame. OSU answered with four points before Jenkins hit the back end of a pair of free throws for a 49-48 contest at 2:12. Collier returned the lead to Oregon State for the final time hitting a layup at 1:56. The Beavers closed the game going 6-for-6 at the free throw line as Allen hit a triple at the buzzer for the final 58-54 score.
In the first half, Holloway hit his second trey with 21 seconds on the clock to give the Patriots their first lead of the game and a 29-28 halftime advantage. Mason trailed by as many as nine points twice in the first half as Oregon State's Roberto Nelson hit a jumper at the 9:36 mark to give the Beavers a 22-15 advantage. Over the final 7:44 minutes of play, Mason outscored Oregon State 18-8 fueled by two treys from Holloway to take the 29-28 lead. Holloway's first triple tied the game at 24-24 with 2:06 remaining.
The Patriots wrap up the Diamond Head Classic on December 25 facing Saint Mary's at 1:30 p.m. ET on ESPN3 in the seventh-place game.
