The George Mason men's soccer team continues its run in the Atlantic 10 Tournament, matching up against #1 seed and defending conference champion St. Louis in the championship match on Sunday, November 17 at noon The match will be the fourth between the two opponents, first as conference members, as Mason will vie for its first ever Atlantic 10 championship and first conference championship since 2008.
The Patriots come into Sunday's final after two thrilling victories in the first two rounds of the conference tournament. Mason forced overtime against #7 St. Joseph's on Thursday, eventually culminating in a 0-0 tie after two periods to force a shootout where the team won on penalty kicks, 4-2. Friday saw another overtime affair, as Mason and #3 VCU went into extra time tied 2-2. The drama would end quickly when Alex Herrera connected with Timi Mulgrew for the game winner 34 seconds into the period.
#1 St. Louis was ranked the top seed coming into the tournament after finishing the regular season with a 6-0-2 conference record. The Billikens are led by A-10 Coach of the Year Mike McGinty, Midfielder of the Year Alex Sweetin and Defensive Player of the Year Anthony Manning. St. Louis defeated #8 Massachusetts 2-0 in the quarterfinal round and #4 La Salle 2-1 in the tournament semifinals to advance to Sunday's championship match.
