Box Score FAIRFAX, Va. - A pair of Patriots reached double figures in scoring but the visiting George Washington Colonials completed a season sweep of the George Mason women's volleyball team with a straight-sets victory on Sunday afternoon at the RAC.
Mason dropped to 6-17 as it opened a four-match homestand, falling to 2-7 in Atlantic 10 Conference play. GW improved to 6-2 in league play and 11-11 on the season.
Sophomore Morghan Martin led all players with 12 kills, while senior Lana Zonijc added 10 to pace the Patriot offense. Fellow senior Laura Spencer tallied six blocks (one solo) to lead all players. Leading the way for the Colonials was Chidima Osuchukwu with nine kills.
The first set was close throughout, and while both teams found difficulty from the service line early on, the margin did not grow larger than two points until midway through. GW scored three straight points to break a 12-all deadlock, and the Patriots would not catch up again in the frame. Mason pulled to 23-19, but a Rachael Goss kill and a Colonial block ended the set.
Mason jumped out to a sizeable lead in the second set, responding to an early 5-3 deficit with an 8-2 run. Leading 11-7, the Patriots would lead for a short time longer, until a 6-1 Colonials run put them ahead 18-14. The Patriots got no closer than three points from then on, with six of the final seven points going to GW in the second set, giving them the two-set lead into the locker room.
The Patriots held just a one-point lead early on in the third set, and a 6-2 stretch by GW pushed their advantage to 12-7. Mason continued chipping away at the lead, but each time they drew within a point, the Colonials found an answer to maintain their advantage throughout. It was a two-point game on GW's third match-point opportunity, and Landon Garvik's kill at 24-22 punctuated the match.
George Washington's victory breaks a deadlock in the Revolutionary Rivalry, as the Colonials now lead Mason, 2-1, with both GW points coming in women's volleyball while the Patriots defeated GW, 1-0, in women's soccer Friday night.
Mason is back in action next Friday night, hosting Duquesne in Atlantic 10 action at the RAC. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
