KINGSTON, R.I. - Sophomore Morghan Martin tallied a career-high 17 kills, but it was not enough as the George Mason women's volleyball team closed out its road trip with a 3-1 loss at Rhode Island on Friday night at Keaney Gymnasium. The Patriots dropped to 6,16 2-6 in Atlantic 10 Conference play while the Rams improved to 4-4 in conference and 12-12 overall.

Martin's offensive tally was a match-high, while junior Stephi Matsushima had a match high as well with 16 digs. Three Rams scored in double-figures, led by 16 kills from Lena Vedder.

Mason stormed out to a 4-0 lead to begin the match but Rhody came back with an 11-1 run. The Patriots cut their deficit to 12-7, but could not threaten the URI lead any closer as Vedder's kill put the hosts up one set to none.

Set number two was all square through the first 24 points, but the 12-12 tie was broken by Mason's 7-1 run. Their six point lead would be the largest of the night, and the Rams crept back to within four at 24-20, but redshirt sophomore Lolade Owokoniran slammed a kill to even the match as the teams headed into intermission.

Close in the early going, the Rams broke open the third set with a 12-4 run, giving them a 14-6 lead. Mason rallied, but a 7-0 scoring stretch by URI ended the set. The Patriots led for much of the first half of the fourth set, but after the Rams tied the score at 13, they would hold on for the victory with a 13-3 run to finish the match.

The Patriots open a four-match homestand on Sunday afternoon, hosting George Washington in the Revolutionary Rivalry. First serve from Fairfax is set for 1 p.m.
