FAIRFAX, Va. – Extending its win streak to three consecutive games, the George Mason women's soccer team also picked up its third straight shutout Sunday afternoon with a 3-0 thrashing of Fordham. Lyndse Hokanson recorded eight saves in the victory that pushed Mason to 3-1 in Atlantic 10 Conference play and 6-7-1 overall. The Rams dipped to 3-8-3, 1-3-1.

A 2-0 lead came quickly for the Patriots in the first half as the home squad scored two goals in the first 14 minutes of action. After opportunities from both teams in the early going, Sydney Mitchell broke through with the first goal of the contest in the 6th minute of play. On the far corner, Emma Starr crossed it over to find Mitchell in the box as Mitchell punched it in from 12-yards out for the 1-0 Mason lead.

Less than 10 minutes later, Emily Harvey doubled Mason's lead with her second goal of the season. Carrying the ball down midfield, Harvey passed it off to Jazmin Cardoso who returned possession to Harvey. The junior blasted the attempt past Megan Fitzgerald for a 2-0 advantage that carried through halftime. Fordham looked several times to cut the score as Hokanson made five stops in the first half.

The Patriots took its final 3-0 lead with 15 minutes left in the game as Starr tallied her third goal of the season. After two attempts that resulted in saves, Starr received each rebound and on the third shot, found the back of the net for the goal in the 76th minute. Fordham attacked late in the second half to trim its disadvantage, but solid defense held off the Rams as Mason recorded its sixth shutout of the season.

For the contest, Fordham outshot Mason 18-14 as a combined 17 shots on goal were recorded with the Patriots leading with nine. Fordham goalkeepers Fitzgerald and Ally White split time in net, combining for six saves. The Rams held a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks.

“We were really working on possession in this game,” commented head coach Diane Drake. “It's something we have been discouraged with as we are a more technical team that what we have displayed. As we grow in confidence, we get better every game in this area. I am very proud of our effort in the A-10 in the last three games.”

Mason will look to continue its winning ways welcoming Richmond on Saturday, October 19 at 7 p.m.
