KINGSTON, R.I.Emily Harvey scored the game-winning goal in a George Mason women's soccer 1-0 victory at Rhode Island on Friday night. The Patriots picked up their second straight Atlantic 10 Conference victory and shutout in the triumph, improving their overall record to 5-7-1. Rhode Island dropped to 5-8 overall and 0-3 in A-10 action.

The game was highly contested as Mason narrowly outshot the Rams, 10-9. URI, however, held the narrow advantage in shots on goal, 4-3. Harvey led Mason offensively with three shots, two on target. Goalkeeper Lyndse Hokanson made all four stops to pick up the win.

In Mason's fifth shutout of the season, Harvey broke through with the game-winning goal in the 37th minute. Rhode Island tried to attack early in the contest as a header was blocked in the 16th minute and Hokanson made her first save in the period just two minutes later. Mason saw a strong opportunity early on, but was called for an offside before Harvey's tally in the 37th minute of action. Harvey dribbled the ball around a Rhode Island defender and blasted a shot past goalkeeper Chelsea Broghamer for the 1-0 Mason lead that carried into halftime.

Harvey looked to cushion Mason's lead t0 minutes into the second half, but Broghamer came up with the save to keep the Patriots at bay. The Rams threatened late, posting two shots on goal in the final eight minutes as Hokanson was able to make both stops for the shutout.

“This was a game of polarized opposites from Saint Louis where we had to break down a stubborn back eight,” commented head coach Diane Drake. “In this match, Rhode Island was attacking with 10 after we scored. The first half I felt we were the stronger side and after we scored, the match became more physical as a typical conference match. I am very proud of the girls to get a road win and a shutout.”

Mason returns to action at home on Sunday, October 13 welcoming Fordham at 4 p.m.
