The George Mason women's volleyball team dropped a pair of
non-conference matches in straight sets Saturday afternoon at the High Point
Classic, falling 25-14, 25-14, 25-20 to Virginia Tech before a 25-18, 25-21,
31-29 defeat by Loyola Marymount.
Following the conclusion of the final match, freshman Bernetta Moore was selected to the High Point Classic All-Tournament Team.
The Patriots stand at 2-8 after completing
play at the Millis Center, and will next travel to Philadelphia for the Crowne
Plaza Philadelphia West Penn Invitational Tournament on Friday and Saturday.

Three different Patriots led the offense with seven kills,
with Danielle Cook, Lana Zonjic and Lolade Owokoniran each chipping in. Lauren
Goodell had 28 assists while Bernetta Moore had a team-high seven digs. VT, who hit
.514 on the match, was led by Jennifer Wiker's 10 kills.
Tech opened on a 5-1 run in the match, and the Hokies never
trailed in the opening set. Mason pulled to within two at 9-7 after a Zonjic
ace, but it would be the closest the Patriots could get. VT pushed a 14-10
advantage into a 23-12 lead, and the teams traded points before a Mason hitting
error ended the set.
After a 1-1 tie, the Hokies again took the lead for good in
the second set. Mason kept it close in the early going, but leading 13-10, Tech
opened up a double-digit advantage using an 8-1 run. The lead grew as large as
12 before back-to-back Zonjic kills and a Victoria Hamsher kill finished up the
second set.
Mason stayed within range for the duration of the third set,
but was unable to take the lead. The
Patriots cut it to 9-7, but four in a row by the Hokies forced a Mason timeout.
From there, Mason got no closer than four points as VT finished up the sweep.

Freshman Meredith Bush posted a season-high 11 kills to lead
the Patriots in their final match of the weekend, while Moore posted a
team-best 17 digs. A quartet of Lions
had double-figure kills, led by 16 each from Litara Keil and Kathleen Luft.
Loyola Marymount opened on a 5-0 run, but the Patriots had a
5-1 run of their own to tie the score at six. Mason led by as many as two,
after a Danielle Cook and Laura Spencer block made it 12-10. LMU answered with
a 9-2 run and would take the first set.
After the Patriots scored four of the first six points in
the second set, five in a row went to the Lions and they would lead until a
Bush kill made it 10-all. Tied at 11, four straight points were scored by LMU,
part of a larger 10-3 run. The Patriots pulled within three after the Lions
went up 24-18, but a Luft kill gave LMU the second set.
Mason led 3-2 in the third set, but five straight points
were scored by the Lions. They led by as many as six at 15-9 before the
Patriots stormed back, staving off elimination at 24-21 by scoring three
straight points. Playing their longest set of the season to date, Mason had
opportunities to force a fourth set twice, but Keil tied the score at 29 on a
kill, combined with Luft for a block and slammed the match-winning kill to end
it.
