CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The George Mason women's soccer team
could not overcome three first-half goals from No. 7 Virginia Friday night,
dropping a 3-0 decision at Klockner Stadium. Junior Lyndse Hokanson set a
career-high in saves, finishing with nine on the evening to keep Virginia scoreless
in the second half. Virginia pushed its win streak to six games, moving to 6-1
on the season, while Mason dipped to 3-4 with the loss.
In the 8th minute, Mason posted a shot on frame
when Sydney Mitchell took a touch off a Tiana Kallenberger pass. The shot went
to the far post, but Danielle DeLisle was in position to scoop up the save.
Mason saw another scoring opportunity five minutes later when Kallenberger,
carrying the ball up the near side, crossed it to Mitchell on the far corner. The
pass went between a Cavalier defender, but before Mitchell could get a touch on
the ball, Virginia broke up the play.
The home squad opened the scoring with a tally in the 18th
minute as Molly Menchel made a sliding kick to push in a cross from Kate Norb.
Menchel put Virginia up by two with her second goal of the contest coming less
than three minutes later when the junior stole possession and fired a shot from
25 yards out into the top left corner of the net above the hands of Briana Kottler.
The Cavaliers took a 3-0 lead in the 30th minute on an unassisted
shot from Kaili Torres from 12 yards out to the far post to cap the scoring in
the first half.
Virginia controlled possession in the first 45 minutes,
outshooting the Patriots 13-2, including a 4-1 shots on goal edge, and 5-0 in
corner kicks.
Mason immediately jumped out strong to open the second half
as Kallenberger, on the near side, drove a shot that Virginia goalkeeper
Churchill O'Connell deflected high. On the rebound off the crossbar, Jazmin Cardoso,
from two yards out, tried to push it past O'Connell, but the shot went wide.
After making her first save in the 54th minute, Hokanson
made a diving save to erase a Cavalier threat in the 58th minute as
the home squad tried to convert a combination play when Caroline Miller
received an Olivia Brannon ball as Hokanson dove to her left to stop the play.
Hokanson continued to scoop up threats as the junior made
five saves within the first 20 minutes of the half. In the 67th minute,
Hokanson dove to her right for her sixth save of the period to stop a blast
from Makenzy Doniak as the Cavalier looked to expand Virginia's lead off a
Torres pass from the near side.
The Patriot tied her career-high of eight saves when she
jumped high to punch out an Emily Sonnett shot off a corner kick in the 85th
minute. Less than a minute later, the junior Patriot made her ninth stop of the
period to set a career-high in saves.
For the game, Virginia outshot Mason (29-5), held a 13-2
advantage in shots on goal and a 9-0 edge in corner kicks. Mitchell led Mason
with two shots, while Miller posted six shots for the Cavaliers.
