WASHINGTON, D.C. - Liz Hodges tallied two goals and Tiana
Kallenberger cushioned the lead as the George Mason women's soccer team
defeated Howard 3-1 Tuesday night at Greene Stadium. With the victory, Mason
improved to 3-3 overall, while Howard dipped to 0-5-2.
Mason dominated possession throughout the game and limited
the Howard offense as the Patriots outshot the Bison 21-2, including a 15-2
advantage in shots on goal. Playing the full game in net, Howard's goalkeeper
Kyra Dickinson posted 12 saves, eight coming in the first half, as Lyndse
Hokanson recorded one save late in the game for the Patriots. Briana Kottler
earned the start in net and picked up the win.
Hodges, Kallenberger and Casey Vornadore each tallied three
shots to lead the Patriot offense, while Emma Starr, Kelly Pizzingrilli, Nicole
Clark and Karina Irizarry posted two apiece. Jordan Brown recorded the lone
two shots for Howard.
Mason held the majority of possession and controlled
momentum after brushing off a slow start as Howard did not register a shot in
the first period. The Patriots pressured within the first two minutes as
Kallenberger carried the ball down the near side, setup a cross to Vornadore on
the far post who blasted a shot that was blocked by a Bison defender in net. On
the rebound, Starr took a touch and sailed a shot that hit the crossbar, nearly
missing the net, bounced back as Harvey tried to complete the goal, but Dickinson
scooped up the attempt for a save.
Starr tried to put Mason on the board again in the 16th
minute as Cardoso delivered a pass to Starr who was 25 yards out from the right
post as the freshman's strike was deflected by Dickinson above the crossbar.
Hodges broke through for Mason in the 26th minute
with a tally off a cross from Kallenberger. The senior, in the near corner, collected
a pass from Cardoso, setup a pass to Hodges in the left center of the box.
Hodges finished the play from three yards out with a ball under the keeper for
the 1-0 early Patriot lead.
Hodges and Kallenberger combined again 17 minutes later,
putting the visiting squad up 2-0 with three minutes to play in the opening
period. Off a short corner from Cardoso, Kallenberger saw Hodges in the same
position, connected with the sophomore as Hodges put it past the keeper for her
second goal of the night. Under two minutes later, Hodges tried for her third
goal of the contest with a shot forcing Dickinson to dive to her left and punch
the attempt out as the teams entered halftime with Mason leading 2-0.
Just under ten minutes expired in the second half, Mason
took a 3-0 lead when Kallenberger tallied her fifth goal of the season,
finishing a Vornadore pass.
Howard put together its first shot on goal in the 74th
minute when Brown, on the near post, blasted a shot to the near corner, but Hokanson
was in position to scoop up the attempt. The Patriots threatened again in the 81st
minute as Nicole Clark tried to convert a Cami Verschooris pass, but the shot
went high.
Howard got on the board with just over four minutes
remaining as Brown carried the ball down the middle of the field and scored on
an open net as Hokanson came out to cutoff the play, accounting for the final
score.
Mason returns to action at the Virginia Nike
Soccer Classic, September 7-9, opening the tournament facing No. 9 Virginia on
Friday at 5 p.m. A tilt against Richmond closes the tournament for the Patriots
on Sunday at 12 p.m.
