FAIRFAX, Va. - Behind goals from Tiana Kallenberger and Liz
Hodges, the George Mason women's soccer team defeated Old Dominion, 2-1, Sunday
afternoon at George Mason Stadium in Colonial Athletic Association play. The
win pushed Mason to a 5-7-1 overall record and 1-2-1 league mark, while ODU
dipped to 2-9, 0-3 with the loss.
For the game, Mason put 10 shots on goal to ODU's five,
forcing Monarch goalkeeper Laura Bush into eight saves. Playing in net and
picking up the win for Mason, Lyndse Hokason made four stops. Overall, Mason outshot
ODU 17-12, while the Monarchs narrowly won the edge in corner kicks, 5-4.
Kallenberger led Mason with five shots, three on target, while Hodges totaled
four shots, including two on frame. Ashlee Coutu led the visiting squad with
five shots, two on goal.
Kallenberger broke through in the 69th minute and
put Mason on top 1-0 with her eighth goal of the season. From the near side,
Kallenberger blasted a shot from 35-yards out into the top left corner out of
the reach of Bush. Hodges cushioned Mason's lead with her fifth tally of the
season coming in the 79th minute. Ten-yards out in front of the net,
Hodges kicked in a shot off an ODU defender into the right corner of the net
for a 2-0 Patriot lead. Dani O'Brien was credited with the assist on the play.
ODU cut the lead in half at the 89:11 mark when Coutu
punched in a Kelly Farrell corner kick from two-yards out into the right corner
for the final 2-1 score.
In the first half, Hodges tried to put Mason on the board in
the 33rd minute as Nicole Clark dropped a pass up to Kallenberger on
the far side. Kallenberger served Hodges the ball at the near corner as the sophomore's
header went just wide of the net.
In the final 15 minutes of the opening period, Mason's
offensive threat came alive as the Patriots pressured the Monarchs, putting
five shots on goal. In the 34th minute, Shianne Mack drove a free
kick for Mason to the top left corner of the net, forcing Bush to punch the
attempt high. Off the Jazmin Cardoso corner that followed, Amanda Stephenson made
Bush dive to her right to stop the shot on frame as Kallenberger's shot off the
rebound was blocked by the Monarchs.
Mason's Sydney Mitchell and Clark put two shots on target
within two minutes of each other, but Bush made the stops as the ODU goalkeeper
came up with six saves in the opening half. At a scoreless intermission, Mason
held an 11-5 shot advantage over the visiting squad, including a 6-1 shots on
goal edge. Corner kicks stood even at three-apiece at halftime.
Mason returns to the road to begin a three-game
homestand traveling first to James Madison for a midweek matchup. The Patriots
and Dukes meet on Thursday, October 4 at 7 p.m.
