FAIRFAX, Va. - The George Mason women's soccer team could
not overcome a goal in the 60th minute from William and Mary as the
Patriots dropped a 1-0 decision Friday night at George Mason Stadium in
Colonial Athletic Association play. Mason moved to 4-7-1 overall and 0-2-1 in
league play, while the Tribe improved to 8-3, 2-0 with the win.
William & Mary controlled possession in the opening 10
minutes of the first half before play evened out the remainder as the
conference foes combined for 11 shots in the period. Both teams put two shots
on frame as Mason held a 2-1 advantage in corner kicks. As the Tribe opened
strong, Emory Camper looked to put the visiting squad up in the fifth minute
trying to complete a Dani Rutter pass, but the shot hit the net wide.
The Patriots put together a pair of scoring opportunities
late in the first half. Mason's Casey Vornadore forced William & Mary goalkeeper
Caroline Casey to jump high on the Patriots' first shot on frame. Casey punched
the attempt over the top crossbar in the 32nd minute, erasing a
Mason threat.
Five minutes later, freshman Sydney Mitchell forced Casey to
dive to her right to block another Mason threat as the Patriot carried the ball
up the near side and fired a shot from 25-yards out to the near corner. Mason
attempted two shots in the final eight minutes as neither team was able to find
the back of the net for a scoreless tie at intermission.
After an aggressive start to the second half from the
visiting squad, the Tribe broke through in the 60th minute as
Cortlyn Bristol registered her third goal of the season. The senior controlled
the ball from the lower third of the field and blasted the shot from the near
corner, 18-yards out, into the upper right corner for the 1-0 lead.
In the 61st minute, Tiana Kallenberger tried to
knot the score as the senior captain carried the ball up the near side, beat
out a Tribe defender and from 8-yards out, forced Casey to dive in front to
block the shot, leaving an open net as a pair of Tribe defenders kicked the
ball away. The senior put another shot
on goal just over two minutes later as Casey collected her fourth save of the
contest.
Kallenberger looked again to even the score in the 87th
minute as the senior blasted a shot from 20-yards out in the middle, but a line
of Tribe defenders blocked the attempt.
For the game, Mason put five shots on goal to William &
Mary's three and outshot the Tribe 11-9. The Patriots also held a 5-2 advantage
in corner kicks. Tribe goalkeeper Casey came up strong in net, making five
stops to keep Mason off the board, while Mason goalkeeper Lyndse Hokanson made
two stops.
George Mason returns to the pitch on Sunday
welcoming Old Dominion to Fairfax for a 2 p.m. contest.
