The George Mason men's soccer
team will step into the national spotlight on Friday, traveling to face No. 14
Old Dominion University in Norfolk. The game will be broadcast nationally on
Fox Soccer Channel as part of the NSCAA College Game of the Week, with an
anticipated kickoff time of 7:07 p.m. Broadcasting the game will be Dean Linke
(play-by-play), Keith Tabatznik (color) and sideline reporter Charlie Slagle.
The Patriots lead the all-time
series, 17-14-2, last defeating the then-No. 11 Monarchs, 1-0, a season ago in
Fairfax. Friday's contest pits two of the conference's top
offensive and defensive teams this season. Offensively, ODU has a
conference-best 63 total points and 22 goals, while Mason is second with 56
total points and 21 goals. Additionally, Mason is ninth in the nation in
scoring offense (2.63) and total goals (21) and has outscored its opponents,
21-7.
Defensively Mason holds the edge, topping the conference with a 0.84
goals-against average while standing second with seven goals allowed. ODU is
fourth with a 1.14 goals-against average and third with eight goals allowed.
Both teams have three shutouts.
Mason opened CAA action with a
2-0 win over UNC Wilmington last Saturday. Senior Taylor
Morgan scored in the sixth minute and sophomore Timi Mulgrew added a tally in
the 54th minute to secure the win. Senior keeper Dustin Butcher played
the duration, recording his third shutout of the season. The Patriots ranked 20th
in the NSCAA polls a week ago, but after a 2-1 double-overtime loss to Navy
last week dropped out of the rankings released this Tuesday. The Patriots are
led by Mulgrew's 14 points (5g, 4a), while Morgan has a team-high six goals.
Butcher has been the mainstay in goal, starting all eight matches and posting a
0.84 goals-against average and a .708 save percentage.
The Monarchs went a perfect 6-0 to start the season before dropping its
CAA opener to Drexel, 4-1. The Dragons scored four unanswered. Tim Hopkinson
scored the lone Monarch tally in the 81st minute off a helper by
Jordan LeBlanc. ODU currently ranks ninth by College Soccer News, 12th
by Soccer America and 14th by the NSCAA. Hopkinson leads ODU with 20
points on eight goals and four assists. Chris Harmon has 12 points (4g, 4a) and
LeBlanc has chipped in 11 points (4g, 3a). Victor Francoz has started all seven
matches in net for the Monarchs, posting a 1.16 goals-against average (8 GA)
and a .758 save percentage (25 svs.).
