PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - In the Colonial Athletic Association
opener for both teams, the George Mason women's soccer team and Drexel played
to a 1-1 draw at Vidas Field on Friday night. Mason took the early lead with a
Liz Hodges tally in the fourth minute, but Drexel scored with 16 minutes left
in regulation to tie the contest. With the draw, the Patriots moved to 4-5-1,
while the Dragons stand at 6-1-2 and both teams are 0-0-1 in league play.
Mason wasted no time getting on the board early, scoring just
over three minutes into action, a lead that would carry into halftime. On the
carry, Tiana Kallenberger put a through ball to the foot of Casey Vornadore as
the junior forced Drexel goalkeeper Eve Badana to her right, knocking out the
attempt. The save was short-lived, however, as Hodges controlled the rebound
and punched it in from 12-yards out into the left corner to give Mason the 1-0
lead.
Kallenberger tried to double the lead in the 20th
minute on a combination play with Hodges as Kallenberger played the ball off to
Hodges in the middle of the box. Hodges touched the ball and passed it back to
Kallenberger on the near side and sent a shot just above the crossbar. Mason threatened
again five minutes later when Kelly Pizzingrilli carried the ball down the near
side and looked to have an open shot, but a Drexel defender blocked the attempt
on a sliding tackle.
Badana erased a Patriot threat in the 40th minute
when Kallenberger tried to complete a Sydney Mitchell pass from midfield, as
the Dragon caught the strike on a jump. Mason finished the opening half with a
4-1 shots on goal advantage and a 9-5 favor in shots. Badana recorded three
saves in the period to hold the visiting squad to one goal.
Drexel looked for the equalizer early in the second half with
its first pair of corner kicks. Lyndse Hokanson slapped away an Alyssa Findlay
attempt at the left corner off a Courtney Wylie corner before Hokanson cleared
away Wylie's second corner kick just a minute later.
The Dragons continued their early pressure on the Patriots as
Jess Lowinger carried the ball up the middle, but Paige Babel beat out Lowinger
and kicked it out to Hokanson who cleared away the threat. In the 58th
minute, Vornadore tried to cushion Mason's lead off a Kallenberger pass as
Badana dove to her left to make the save.
Drexel, however, scored the equalizer in the 74th
minute as Melissa Chapman headed in a Christine Stevenson corner kick from
five-yards out on the near post into the left corner of the net to knot the
score at 1-all. The teams remained scoreless over the final 16 minutes of
regulation as Mason entered into its second overtime contest of the season.
Neither team saw a solid scoring opportunity in the first
overtime as the Patriots and Dragons played 10 minutes of scoreless action
before entering a second overtime period. Early in the second overtime, Chapman
put a shot on frame, but Hokanson made the easy scoop. Sam Greenfield tried for
the game-winner in the 106th minute, but Hokanson was in position to
make the stop as the teams closed out the 1-1 draw.
For the game, both teams put five shots on goal as Drexel
narrowly edged Mason, 13-12 in shots and 4-3 in corner kicks. Hokanson and
Badana each scooped up four saves playing the full 110 minutes. Kallenberger,
Vornadore and Jazmin Cardoso each recorded three shots as Vornadore put two on
frame. Chapman led Drexel with four shots.
George Mason returns to the pitch and continues
conference play at Delaware on Sunday for a 1 p.m. matinee.
