Men's Soccer Hosts Navy in Non-Conference Action on Tuesday

The George Mason men's soccer team is off to a perfect 6-0 start, its best since the 1985 team went 12-0. The Patriots are coming off of a 2-1 win over UMBC on Saturday, scoring twice in the first half to hold on for the win. Sophomore Timi Mulgrew netted Mason's first goal in the eighth minute and added an assist on Taylor Morgan's game-winning goal in the 29th minute.

Mulgrew currently leads Mason with 12 points (4g, 4a), while Morgan has a team-high five goals. Senior Dustin Butcher has been the mainstay in goal, starting all six matches and posting a 0.81 goals-against average and a .615 save percentage. As a team, Mason has outscored its opponents 18-5 this season, and is one of the most potent offenses in the nation, ranking fourth in scoring offense (3.0 goal per game average), eighth with 18 goals and 14th with 47 total points.

The Patriots enter the week ranked 37th in the weekly poll and will look to jump into the NSCAA National Top 25 (released Tuesday afternoon) after sitting just outside last week, standing third amongst schools receiving votes. Regionally, the squad ranked third in the NSCAA South Atlantic Region poll behind Maryland and Old Dominion.

Mason and Navy renew an old CAA rivalry as the two squads meet for the first time since 1991, the first season after Navy left the conference. Mason won the 1991 matchup, 1-0, and has won the last four meetings dating back to 1989, including a 3-0 win over the Midshipmen in the 1990 CAA Tournament.

Navy owns a 2-2-1 overall record and is coming off of a 5-0 win over Richmond on Saturday. The Midshipmen scored all five goals in the first half, the first time it scored five goals since 2010 and the most goals scored in a half since 1995. Individually, Navy is led by Alex Wilson's six points (2g, 2a), while Grant Valenstein has added two goals of his own. In net, Gavin Snyder has started all five matches, posting a 1.48 goals-against average and a .611 save percentage. Navy has faced two CAA opponents this season, losing to ODU, 4-0, in its season opener before tying Delaware, 1-1, last Wednesday.
