MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The George Mason women's soccer team could
not overcome two second half goals at No. 24 Marquette, dropping a 2-0 decision
Sunday afternoon at Valley Fields. Mason closed out non-conference play with a
4-5 overall record, while Marquette improved to 5-2-1 with the win.
After playing through a scoreless first half, the Golden
Eagles used two goals within the first 17 minutes of the second half to take a
2-0 lead. Ally Miller struck first for Marquette scoring in the 51st
minute off an assist from Emily Jacobson. Miller scored straight off a corner
kick into the right corner of the net for her third goal of the season.
Lyndse Hokanson erased a Marquette threat in the 57th
minute stopping a Kate Reigle shot on frame, but Taylor Madigan doubled the
lead five minutes later when the Golden Eagle scored into an open section of
the net after Meagan Kelly's shot prior was high. Kelly was credited with the
assist on the play in the 62nd minute. Hokanson recorded her final
save in the 68th minute stopping a Mady Vicker shot on goal.
Emily Harvey tried to cut the deficit in half with a shot on
goal in the 78th minute, but Marquette goalkeeper Sofie Schunk was
in position to make the save.
Marquette outshot Mason in the first half, 11-1, as Engel
came up with one stop in the opening period and Hokanson recorded four stops to
keep the home squad scoreless. Tiana Kallenberger was credited with Mason's
lone shot coming in the 41st minute, forcing Engel into the save. The
Golden Eagles also held a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks at intermission.
Controlling possession and pace of play, Marquette held the
advantage in shots (22-3), shots on goal (8-2) and corner kicks (6-1) after the
full 90 minutes of play. Hokanson finished the game with six saves, while Amanda Engel and Schunk combined for two stops.

Tire College Rankings poll and No. 19 by Top Drawer Soccer.
Mason returns to action and continues this
six-game road swing opening Colonial Athletic Association play at Drexel on
Friday, September 21. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
