FAIRFAX, Va. - Taylor Brown, a guard who played her freshman
season at Georgetown University, will transfer to George Mason for the 2012-13
season as announced by women's basketball head coach Jeri Porter today. Brown will
sit out the 2012-13 season in accordance with NCAA transfer rules, but will
have three seasons of eligibility remaining with the Patriots beginning in the
2013-14 campaign.
"We are extremely pleased that Taylor has decided to
continue her academic and athletic career here at George Mason," commented
Porter. "Taylor represents the very best that this talent-rich area has to
offer and we are excited about the impact that she will undoubtedly have on
both our program and the very competitive Colonial Athletic Association."
Brown appeared in all 32 games for the Hoyas in 2011-12,
where the 5'7" Bowie, Md., native averaged 4.1 points and 1.6 rebounds. The
local native started in 12 games, dishing out 27 assists and managing 27
steals. A strong shooter, Brown helped Georgetown to a 23-9 overall record and
11-5 BIG EAST mark hitting 38.5 percent from the field and 35.4 percent from
beyond the arc. Also a consistent shooter at the charity stripe, the incoming
sophomore connected on 19-of-29 (.655) attempts from the free throw line last
season.
Playing 20 minutes in her first start of the season against Houston (Nov. 19),
Brown chipped in nine points on 4-of-10 shooting from the floor, pulled down
three rebounds and recorded two steals. In her second start the following game,
Brown recorded a season-best 13 points and six rebounds in 25 minutes of action
in the victory over Monmouth (Nov. 21).
As a prep player coming out of Bishop McNamara High School, Brown hit the
1,000th point mark as a senior after averaging 20 points, five assists and two
steals and ended her career with more than 1,500 points. Named the 2011
Washington Post Player of the Year and WCAC Player of the Year, Brown was also
tabbed the Prince George's Gazette Player of the Year and Gatorade Player of
the Year for the State of Maryland. She capped her prep career being nominated
for the McDonald's High School All-American Game and was a member of the Parade
Magazine High School All-American Girls Basketball team. Her jersey was hung in
the "Ring of Honor" at the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in
Knoxville, Tenn.
As a junior, she earned a spot on the first team for Washington Post All-Met,
All-Prince George's County and the WCAC after averaging 17 points and four
assists. In 2008 as a sophomore, Brown helped Bishop McNamara to a WCAC
Championship and was tabbed WCAC Honorable Mention.
Brown joins newcomers Kyana Jacobs (Dale City, Va./Pensacola State College),
Reana Mohamed (Laurelton, N.Y./Mary Louis Academy) and Ondrea Shaw (Louisville,
Ky./Coffeyville C.C.) to the Patriot's roster for the 2012-13 season.
