FAIRFAX, Va. - Senior Tiana Kallenberger scored her fourth
goal of the season to give the George Mason women's soccer team the early lead
Friday night, but it was not enough as the visiting Maryland Terrapins scored
three goals thereafter for a 3-1 victory at George Mason Stadium. Maryland
improved to 2-1-1 with the win, while Mason dipped to 2-3.
In a high-paced first-half, both teams pressured the ball
early as the first shot came off the foot of Danielle Hubka of Maryland in the eighth
minute when Mason goalkeeper Briana Kottler recorded her first stop of the
contest. Emma Starr sent a shot wide in the 10th minute looking for
a tally when the freshman controlled a great ball from Kallenberger, but
the shot missed the right corner.
The home squad grabbed the early advantage in the 28th
minute as Emily Harvey and Kallenberger combined for a goal for the third time
this season. Harvey carried the ball up the far side, delivered a cross to find
Kallenberger in between a pair of Terrapin defenders as the senior captain sent
a diagonal shot past the keeper into the left corner of the net from 10 yards
out for the 1-0 early Mason lead.
Gabby Galanti evened the score at 1-1 with a goal in the 39th
minute as the Terrapin, in between a trio of Patriot defenders, dribbled
through and scored with a shot into the right corner of the net. Neither team
saw a solid scoring opportunity to close the period tied at 1-all.
Maryland came out of intermission strong, rattling off four
shots in the first 13 minutes, including a header off Hubka that hit the
crossbar, and a corner kick. Becky Kaplan scored the eventual game-winner just
a minute later off a double assist from Ashley Spivey and Hayley Brock. Spivey
cushioned the Terrapin's lead with a goal in the 65th minute. The Terrapin
scored on a combination play from Alexis Prior-Brown and Domenica Hodak for the
3-1 score.
Kallenberger and Sydney Mitchell put together a solid
scoring opportunity three minutes later, looking to cut the score. Mitchell
carried the ball down the far side, blasted a cross to the middle of the box as
Kallenberger jumped to make contact, forcing goalkeeper Rachelle Beanlands to
jump to make the save.
Maryland outshot Mason 10-7 in the final period as the corner
kicks were even at 5-5. Kottler came up strong for the Patriots in the final
period, stopping four balls to finish with five saves on the evening.
For the game, Maryland held the advantage in shots (17-10)
and shots on goal (8-4) as Mason finished with a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks. Beanlands made three
stops, all coming in the second half. Kallenberger led Mason with six shots,
putting three on goal as Starr registered two shots. Hubka led the Terrapins
with four shots.
