WASHINGTON, D.C. - The George Mason men's soccer team recorded three
first-half goals from three different players as it rolled past George
Washington, 3-0, on Thursday afternoon in its first game of the D.C. College
Cup hosted by American University.
With the win Mason secured its second shutout of the season to
improve to 2-0. GW dropped to 1-1.
"The guys played well today," said Head Coach
Greg Andrulis. "After getting the lead they were mature in managing the ball
and flow of the match. We now have a quick turnaround as we prepare for
American on Saturday."
The Patriots wasted no time scoring its first goal of the match, as Wesley
Sever settled a pass from Alex Herrera with just 1:42 taken off the clock for a
1-0 lead.
The Patriots extended the lead to 2-0 in the 16th minute.
Zak Haapaoja put a shot on net, sending the ball past GW keeper Alejandro Almodovar who put a hand on the ball but was unable to come up with the save.
It took just under seven minutes for Mason to strike again, as
Taylor Morgan netted his first goal of the season to push the lead to 3-0.
Going in to the half, Mason owned a commanding 10-1 shot advantage and a 3-2
edge in corner kicks.
Like the first game of the season, the Patriots were able to play
several reserve players in the second half, again leading the Colonials in
corner kicks, 7-1, while putting six shots on the board. The defense was also
strong, not allowing a single GW shot in the final 45 minutes.
Dustin Butcher played all 90:00 and did not face a shot en route
to his second shutout of the young season. GW keepers Almolovar and JP Van der
Merwe split time, with each recording three saves.
For the match, Mason led in shots, 16-1, and corner kicks, 10-3, and did not
allow the Colonials to put a shot on goal.
The Patriots return to the pitch on Saturday in pursuit of their
third-consecutive D.C. College Cup title, facing host American University at
3:00 p.m.
