FAIRFAX, Va. - Sophomore Timmy Mulgrew scored a goal and
added an assist to lead the George Mason men's soccer team to a 3-0 win over
LIU Brooklyn (0-2) in the Patriots' season opener on Sunday evening at George
Mason Stadium.
Junior Wesley Sever started the Mason scoring in the 13th
minute of the match, settling a feed from Mulgrew just outside the keeper box,
drawing LIU Brooklyn's John Connolly off of his line before tapping the ball
home for a 1-0 lead.
Despite not registering a goal the rest of the half, the
Patriots controlled the offensive tempo, ending the first 45 minutes with a
10-2 advantage on shots (4-0 SOG) and a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.
Mulgrew added his goal in the 67th minute,
chipping a shot past the Blackbirds keeper to put Mason up 2-0. It didn't take
long for the Patriots to add their final goal of the match, as freshman Ghiles
Harmouche contended with two LIU Brooklyn defenders and the keeper for a loose
ball, eventually winning the challenge and sending the ball to the back of the
net for his first collegiate goal and the final 3-0 margin.
Mason controlled the match, finishing with an 18-7 advantage
in shots and 5-2 edge in corner kicks. Senior Taylor Morgan led the Patriots
with six shots, including three on goal.
Senior keeper Dustin Butcher earned the win, playing the
entire match and stopping two Blackbird shots en route to his first win of the
season. LIU's Connolly dropped to 0-1, allowing three goals while stopping five
shots.
The Patriots return to action on Thursday, traveling to play
George Washington in the D.C. College Cup at American University at 2:30 p.m.
