FAIRFAX, Va. - Behind first-half goals from Emily Harvey and
Tiana Kallenberger, the George Mason women's soccer team defeated crosstown
rival George Washington 2-1 Friday night to close out this two-game homestand
undefeated. Mason improved to 2-1 overall, while George Washington dipped to
0-2.
Mason played an aggressive first five minutes registering four
corner kicks and pressuring the Colonials early in the game. The Patriots
outshot the Colonials 11-1 in the opening period, testing keeper Nicole Fasano
with six shots on goal, forcing Fasano into four saves. The period ended with Mason
holding a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Mason took a 2-0 lead into intermission finding the back of
the net with goals from Harvey and Kallenberger 11 minutes apart. Scoring her
first collegiate goal, Harvey put the Patriots on the board in the 33rd
minute on a header off a Kallenberger assist. Kallenberger carried the ball up
the near side, sailed a cross from the corner of the 18-yard mark into Harvey who
was six yards out in the middle of the box. The sophomore jumped and finished
the play off with a header just above the hands of Fasano into the top left
corner of the net for the 1-0 lead.
Kallenberger cushioned Mason's lead in the first half with
an unassisted goal in the 42nd minute. As Harvey played the ball
down the line, the senior ran onto it and challenged a Colonial defender on the
outside. Kallenberger cut inside and blasted a shot from 18 yards out into the
left corner of the net past Fasano for her second goal of the season.
GW regrouped following intermission and came out strong in
the second half. The Colonials outshot the Patriots 9-6 in the final period as
Briana Kottler came up strong for the Patriots in net, stopping four shots on goal.
Early in the period, the Colonials saw a strong scoring
opportunity in the 57th minute as Claire Haft had a clear shot from
the right corner of the net, but Kottler was in position to make the stop and
erase the threat. Kottler erased another Colonial opportunity in the 71st
minute off a corner kick. Molly Bruh took the corner for the visiting squad,
short-kicked it out to Jane Wallis who took a touch and blasted it to the near
corner of the net as Kottler punched the attempt high and above the net to
clear it away.
The Colonials saw their lone goal come late in the second
half off a penalty kick from Adriana Moya at the 89:22 mark for the final 2-1
score.
Mason finished the game with the advantage in shots (17-10),
shots on goal (11-6) and corner kicks (11-4). Kottler registered five saves in the
contest, including four in the second half, as Fasano came up with nine for
George Washington. Kallenberger, Casey Vornadore and Nicole Clark each tallied
two shots on goal apiece, while Clark and Vornadore led the Patriots with four
shots each. Wallis posted three for the Colonials.
Mason returns to action traveling to Navy on
Sunday, August 26 for a 2 p.m. matchup in Annapolis, Md.
