FAIRFAX, Va. - Tiana Kallenberger's first half goal lifted the George Mason women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over visiting Radford in the Patriots' lone exhibition contest of the season Friday night at George Mason Stadium.
Mason took a 1-0 lead into halftime and held a 9-1 advantage over the Highlanders in both shots and corner kicks. Radford goalkeeper Che' Brown fought off the first scare in just the second minute as Emily Harvey placed a shot on goal off a rebounded Kallenberger shot that hit the crossbar. At 26:28, Harvey threatened again trying to complete a pass from Kallenberger, but Brown dove left and tapped it out to pick up her third save.
Kallenberger put Mason on the board in the 32nd minute connecting on a pass from freshman Emma Starr from the left side of the box. The senior received the pass at the right corner and tapped it in for the tally. Both teams fought back-and-forth the remainder of the half as Mason took four corner kicks and Kallenberger forced Brown into her fifth save of the half with a shot to the right corner of the net.
The second half saw four shots each from both teams as Radford held a narrow 5-4 advantage in corner kicks in the final 45 minutes. Brown and Lexy Eckerle combined for three saves in the period, while Briana Kottler stopped Radford's lone shot on goal.Lyndse Hokanson and Kottler split time in net.
Mason outshot Radford 13-5 and took 13 corner kicks to the Highlanders' six. Kallenberger led Mason with five shots, while Harvey added three on goal.
Mason hits the road to open regular season play, traveling to St. John's on August 17 for a 7 p.m. matchup in New York.
