George Mason's own Tony Skinn is preparing to become the first Patriots men's basketball player to reach the Olympics, as his Nigeria team defeated the Dominican Republic, 88-73, earlier this month in the finals of the FIBA Olympic Qualifiying Tournament in Venezuela. GoMason.com had the chance to catch up with Tony before he heads to London.

How did you get involved with the Nigeria national team?

I have taken part in training camp over the past four summers, but my schedule always conflicted during the summer, which was my offseason.

Talk about the Olympics qualifying process (making the team, traveling to Venezuela, etc.).

Making the team was not too difficult. I think the coach knew who he wanted and it was just about us gelling as quickly as possible. We spent two weeks in China, then traveled to Brazil and then Venezuela (for the FIBA Qualifying Tournament).

You have played internationally for some time, but what does it mean to put on a country's flag and play for national pride?

It's a good feeling because you represent more than just basketball. Our team gave millions of people a chance to root for something. I didn't realize it until the aftermath - it's the first time for the Nigerian basketball team and I'm glad to be a part of that.

There are a number of American players on your team. Has it been helpful to share this experience with them (for example, did you know any of them or play against them at Mason?)

Yes. A lot of us have met overseas etc.; we are all aware of each other's successes. A good friend of mine is Derrick Obasahon, he played in France for two years while I was there so we knew we could bring that together somehow.

What is your schedule like now as you prepare for London?

Just practice - nothing new. It's the same grind, same routine ... eat, sleep, shoot, listen to music.

Many fans around the country and world remember you from the 2006 Final Four run. Do you get recognized as part of that George Mason team often in international play?

All the time, although now it could be for either that or our Nigerian team's accomplishments. I am grateful to God I was able to represent two green jerseys which mean a lot to me.

You are the first George Mason basketball player to compete in the Olympics. What does that mean to you?

It means a lot. I'm the first in a lot of categories in my family, but you start somewhere. I just hope I give the motivation to the kid that feels he can't accomplish things with basketball due to his or her height, circumstances, etc.

What is the one thing you are most excited about in London?

August 2nd against Team USA.....oh and some tea and crumpets (in my English accent)!

Nigeria, part of Group A which includes the United States, opens the Olympic basketball competition as they face Tunisia at 9:00 a.m. London time on Sunday, July 29. Follow Tony's quest for gold online at http://www.london2012.com/basketball/event/men/
