One of the George Mason men's basketball team's newest members will have a chance to display his skills on the international stage this month, as forward Marko Gujanicic will play for his native Serbia in the upcoming FIBA Under-20 Division A European Championship in Slovenia.

Gujanicic, a 6'8" post from Cacak, is one of 24 Serbian players who will compete in Slovenia from July 12-22. The Serbian squad's first game is at 8:45 p.m. local time on Thursday as they take on Montenegro. Serbia will also play Germany (July 13, 6:30 p.m.) and France (July 14, 6:30 p.m.) in pool play at Vitranc Hall in Kranjska Gora.

"Marko called me on Monday night and I was thrilled to hear he made the team," said Patriots head coach Paul Hewitt. "This is a great experience for Marko. It will certainly help him prepare even more for his freshman year at George Mason."

Gujanicic also represented Serbia at the 2011 FIBA U19 World Championship in Latvia. In nine games of competition against international opponents, Gujanicic averaged 8.8 points and 5.6 rebounds, shooting better than 49 percent from the field. Included among his performances was a 16-point, four steal and four rebound outing facing the United States squad led by Coach Hewitt.

Gujanicic most recently played at Stoneridge Prep in Simi Valley, Calif., where he averaged nearly 17 points and more than nine rebounds and six assists per game. A 58 percent shooter including a 40 percent mark from 3-point range, he helped lead Stoneridge to a 25-win season this year, earning team MVP honors.
