The George Mason track and field program is set to host the
CAA Track Championships for the sixth time in program history this Friday and
Saturday at George Mason Stadium.
As the two-time defending men's champions, Mason will look
to capture its third-consecutive title and sixth CAA title in program history,
while the women will attempt to claim the top spot after finishing as
runners-up for the past two seasons.
Reigning CAA Athlete of the Year and last year's Most
Outstanding Field Performer senior Lavell Handy will look to defend his titles
in the long jump, triple jump and 110m hurdles, while 2011 Most Outstanding
Track Performer senior Rachaunn Ruffin will attempt to defend his 100m and 200m
titles while try to become the first CAA male athlete to win four consecutive
titles in the 100m. Also looking to defend consecutive titles is junior David
Verburg, who has won the 400m at the past two championships.
Senior Daniel Callan will look to repeat as the top finisher
in the 3000m steeplechase as will the 4x100 relay.
For the women, senior Nao Ma (1500m), junior Mandissa
Marshall (pole vault) and sophomore Amanda Denger (heptathlon) will defend
their titles from a season ago.
The Mason men enter the conference meet ranked seventh in
the Southeast Region in addition to holding 10 top times/distances in the CAA:
Ruffin in the 100m (10.36), Verburg in both the 200m (20.91) and 400m (45.56), senior
Everett Hackett in the 5000m (14:03.16), freshman Anthony Williams in the 110m
hurdles (14.24), junior George Empty in the 400m hurdles (52.34), senior Daniel
Callan in the 3000m steeplechase (9:20.28), Handy in the long (7.64m) and
triple (15.83m) jumps, and both the 4x100m and 4x400m relays.
The women are currently ranked 15th in the
Southeast Region, and own six top times/distances in the conference: senior Cierra
McGee in the 400m (53.07), senior Grace Mavugara in the triple jump (12.42m),
Marshall in the pole vault (4.30m), freshman Kelsey Reese in the javelin
(47.02m), Denger in the heptathlon (4,674 pts.) and the 4x400m relay.
