NEWARK, N.J. - The George Mason men's volleyball team hit
.394 and recorded 47 kills as it swept NJIT, 3-0, in EIVA action on Friday
evening at the Estelle and Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center.
The Patriots (9-14, 5-5 EIVA) won with set scores of 25-16, 25-17,
25-21. They outhit the Highlanders (10-14, 4-5 EIVA), .394 to .113 while also
dominating the kills (47-29) and blocks (12-1) columns.
Mason wasted no time taking the lead, opening the first set
on a 4-0 run. The Highlanders pulled to within two points on several occasions in
the set, but each time the Patriots responded to maintain the lead and
eventually secure the 26-16 triumph.
Much like the first set, Mason jumped out to a 4-0 lead to
start the second set and after a NJIT point used another 4-0 run to assume an
8-1 advantage. NJIT rattled off seven unanswered points to pull to within one
point (8-7) before both teams exchanged points to leave the match tied at
11-11. However, the Patriots assumed the lead for good on consecutive kills
from junior outside hitters Andrew Dentler and Michael Kvidahl while outscoring
the Highlanders 14-6 down the stretch, claiming the set 25-17.
NJIT opened the third set on a 3-0 run, but Mason rallied to
tie the match at 4-4. Both teams exchanged points to eventually end up at a
20-20 tie, but the Patriots closed the match on a 5-1 run that featured two
kills from Kvidahl and a kill each from senior outside hitter Joe Norton and freshman
middle blocker Hunter Stevens to sweep the Highlanders, 25-21.
Kvidahl led Mason with a game-best 18 kills, junior setter
Javier Perez dished out a game-high 37 assists, and junior middle blocker Piotr
Dabrowski finished with a game-high eight blocks.
Dhruv Lad paced the NJIT offense with six kills.
The Patriots return to action tomorrow afternoon, facing
Rutgers-Newark at 2:00 pm.
