Mason takes to the field in non-conference action on
Tuesday, traveling to face the University of Maryland in College Park. The
Terps have won two-consecutive games over the Patriots, sweeping the
home-and-home series last year.
Mason is 18-11 overall and 3-6 on the road this season. Tuesday's contest kicks off a stretch of nine games away from Spuhler Field for
the Patriots that features stops at Maryland, VCU, Navy, Northeastern and
George Washington.
Senior pitcher A.J. Johnson is the reigning Co-CAA Player of
the Week after surrendering just one run on four hits over 7.0 innings in Mason's
3-1 win over Georgia State on Sunday. He struck out two, retired his final six
batters faced and did not issue a walk for the second-consecutive game.
Senior Brig Tison continues to pace the Mason offense,
leading the team in batting average (.390), on-base percentage (.453), runs
scored (30), hits (48, 1st CAA) and stolen bases (10). Senior
designated hitter Zack Helgeson has a team-high 26 RBI's and nine home runs.
Tuesday's game marks the start of a 10-game homestand for
the Terps, who enter with an overall record of 18-11 and a 9-2 mark at home.
Maryland started the season 11-1 and were ranked as high as 21st in
the Collegiate Baseball News and 25th in the Baseball America Top
25 polls, but have since gone 7-10 and dropped out of the rankings.
KJ Hockaday is hitting a team-best .347 with 35 hits and 15
runs scored, while Alfredo Rodriguez has driven in a team-high 21 runs.
