ALEXANDRIA, Va. - Redshirt senior Taleia Moton was tabbed to
the All-Colonial Athletic Association First Team Wednesday night on the eve of
the Virginia 529 CAA Women's Basketball Championship. The voting was conducted
by the league's head coaches.
Moton becomes the first player since Derevjanik in 2004 to receive an
All-CAA First Team honor. Teammate Amber Easter was named to the All-Rookie
team in 2010.
Helping guide Mason to its best record since 2003-04, Moton
ranks third in the league and 12th nationally in scoring with a 20.7
points per game average and is just the third Patriot in program history to
average more than 20 points in a season. On the road at Delaware this season, she
broke the program's single season scoring record set by Keri Chaconas' 549
points in 1995-96, currently boasting 600 points.
Moton became the first player since Jen Derevjanik in 2004
to score 30 points in a game earlier this season at Longwood. The Fort Washington,
Md. native proceeded to score 30+ points on six occasions, including a stretch
of three consecutive games, becoming only the second player in program history
to do so. Cindy Lundberg recorded three consecutive games of 30+ points in
Mason women's basketball's inaugural season of 1975.
Against VCU on January 22, Moton set the school record for
field goal percentage in a game, going 12-for-14 from the floor (.857). In just
two seasons with the Patriots, Moton is currently the program's 17th
all-time leading scorer (965 points), 21st all-time three-point
field goal leader (43) and 26th all-time assist leader (147).
Moton was joined on the All-CAA first team by the CAA Player
of the Year, Delaware's Elena Delle Donne, Shante Evans of Hofstra, VCU's
Courtney Hurt and Kamile Nacickaite of Drexel. Delaware picked up two
individual honors in Player of the Year Delle Donne and Coach of the Year Tina
Martin. Ashley Betz-White of Old Dominion was named Rookie of the Year and
James Madison's Nikki Newman won the Defensive Player of the Year award.
Receiving CAA recognition in addition to Moton, Mason placed
three Patriots on the All-Academic Honorable Mention team in Janaa Pickard,
Cierra Strickland and Joyous Tharrington.
Earning the #7-seed, Mason will begin tournament
action on Thursday afternoon at 5 p.m. facing 10th-seeded
Northeastern. The 2012 CAA Women's Basketball Championship will take place at
The Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, Md.
