A letterwinner from 1992-96, Keri Chaconas left Mason as the
all-time leading scorer and her name appearing several times in the George
Mason women's basketball record book. In addition to holding the all-time
scoring record, Chaconas ranks first in three-point field goals made with 218.
She currently is the fourth all-time assist leader (439), tied for 10th
in steals (159) and 30th all-time in rebounding (376). She owns the
individual single game scoring record having scored 51 points against East
Carolina in 1995 and until this season, held the single-season scoring record
with 549 points scored during the 1995-96 season. Taleia Moton broke that mark
at Delaware, amassing 600 points thus far in 2011-12.
GoMason.com recently caught up with Chaconas for this
installment of Where Are They Now?
What was your favorite
memory while playing at George Mason?
I can't pick out one particular favorite memory. Have I been gone too long? :o)
What was the best part
of being a student-athlete? The toughest part?
The best part is that you are part of a group, from day one ...and
it continues beyond graduation. It's a
place to belong and a chance to grow.
You make friends through your shared experiences. The toughest part was leaving.
What do you remember
most about your coaching staff at the time?
Coach Lewis loves the game. The assistants were always there to laugh, joke, let us vent and keep us
on task. It was a good division. And don't forget the trainers!!! "Lindy" is the greatest.
What were some funny
moments during your career?
1) There was a road
trip somewhere....we were in a hotel, and had just lost. I think we were supposed to be reflecting on
our performance in our rooms, but a bunch of us were wrestling in the and we
ended up in a dog pile right outside of the elevators on our floor. The elevator door opened and Coach Lewis
stepped out. We all ran without looking
back.
2) My freshman year,
very first road trip, I roomed with Susan (a senior) and she was running late
and I was trying to be nice and wait for her.
We were in minivans and not a bus.
All the minivans thought we were in somebody else's van so they left for
the shoot around without Susan and I.
Lindy had to come back and get us.
I was so sick to my stomach all the way to the shoot around, I couldn't
believe it! I had visions of getting
benched and yelled at and lots of extra running in my head. When we got there everyone just laughed and it
was fine......but it took me a lot of time to recover anyway.
3) One preseason workout
we were running ....200's I think. We had
to do like 15 or something. I think that
was Malcolm as strength coach. We were busting our rears through like 14 of
them and Candace Johnson Hampton was doggin' it. Coach Lewis came down the hill right before
we started the last one. I think he had
a recruit with him. I don't remember if
he was talking Candace up or what, but she took off like a shot on the last
sprint and crushed the rest of us and Coach Lewis raved and raved and laughed
about how fast she had run. The rest of
us were MAD!!! After the fact, it was
just funny.
I could keep going.
:o) But I won't.
Were there any lessons
you learned while playing basketball you were able to carry over to the "real
world"?
Are there any you can't?
Everything applies. I do notice
in my professional career that former athletes typically make good
co-workers. I think it has a lot to do
with work ethic.
Your name appears in
several categories of the George Mason women's basketball record book, what do
you attribute your success in basketball to?
God blessed me athletically and I think I worked pretty
hard. My family always supported me, my
parents sacrificed a lot and I had a lot of great coaches along the way. And I stayed healthy.....that makes a difference
in the record books ;o)
Do you still keep in
contact with your teammates?
I have a couple of 'forever friends' for sure. My family has vacationed every year with
Krista Jay and her family for the last five years or so. I keep up with Motor (Tracy) Kirk, Cricket
Pearson and 'Lindy' Pullen also. I'm
connected to quite a few on Facebook as well.
It's fun to see their families and where life has taken them.
What was your major?
What year did you graduate?
I graduated with an Accounting degree in 1996.
After graduation, what
did you do?
I went to Sweden to play, which is where I met my husband. I stayed for 11 years. I played in Sweden, a
short 10 days in Greece and a season for the Mystics. Then I got married, had two boys and moved to
Charlotte in 2007.
What are you currently
doing?
I currently work as an accountant. I also am involved with my
church and spend time volunteering there - I helped organize a 5k race this
spring for a non-profit. Every day, I
watch in awe as my children grow, try not to miss it and try to be the best
mother and wife that I can.
Have you stayed
involved in the game of basketball in any way?
Absolutely. My oldest
son is playing AAU and my husband is coaching.
My husband and I have just recently started a company here to give
private lessons and clinics to youth in the area.
Do you come back to
visit Mason at all? Has anything changed? If so, what?
I have been back a couple of times. Everything is different! So much has changed with all of the
construction over the years.
If you come back to
Mason, is there anything you must see or have to do?
Just see people-stop in the offices and the training room!
See Lindy-I'm probably broke down somewhere or another and
need some advice from my favorite trainer!
