ST. LOUIS - Senior Ryan Pearson garnered another award on Tuesday, as
the 2012 Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year was selected to the
U.S. Basketball Writers Association's All-District Team for District III, which
includes players from schools in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and
Maryland. The selections were made based on voting from the USBWA's national
membership.
Pearson was the lone representative from the CAA, and is the
only selection in District III outside of the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Helping guide the Patriots to a 24-win season and a
third-place conference finish, Pearson led the team and ranked third in the CAA
scoring 17.0 points per game. The Far Rockaway, N.Y., native also ranks fifth
in the conference in rebounding, leading the Patriots with 8.2 rebounds per
contest. He has posted 12 double-doubles on the year, ranking 30th
in NCAA Division I. Pearson also ranks seventh in the conference in field goal
percentage, connecting on 50.3 percent of his attempts from the field.
Earlier this season, Pearson became just the fourth player
in program history and the only active CAA player to amass more than 1,500
points, 750 rebounds, 100 assists and 100 steals in his four-year career. His 562
points this year rank as the 12th-best single season performance in
school history, and he sits fifth in career scoring at 1,626 points and seventh
in career rebounds (806).
Pearson was joined by four players from the University of
North Carolina (Harrison Barnes, John Henson, Kendall Marshall, Tyler Zeller),
three from Duke (Seth Curry, Mason Plumlee, Austin Rivers), Terrell Stoglin of
Maryland and Virginia's Mike Scott. Zeller earned the Player of the Year, while
top coaching honors went to Virginia's Tony Bennett.
