BLACKSBURG, Va. - The George Mason women's track team had nine ECAC qualifying times while the men finished with 11 IC4A qualifying marks as both squads took part in the Virginia Tech Challenge over the weekend.
The women qualified eight individuals and one relay at the two-day meet, including two qualifying marks from senior Monique McKenzie and junior Crystalynne Clark. McKenzie posted qualifying marks in the 800m run (2:13.37) while finishing in seventh, and also in the 1000m run (2:55.34), taking the eighth spot. Clark finished fourth in the 60m (7.64) and sixth in the 200m (25.00).
Other individual ECAC qualifiers included junior Taylor Wheaton in the 400m (56.19), sophomore Dianna Barron in the 400m (55.83), freshman Heather Selheimer in the 1000m (2:54.76) and senior Grace Mavugara in the triple jump (12.15m). Also qualifying was the 4x400m relay team of senior Cierra McGee, Wheaton, sophomore Dominique Graham and Barron who won the event in a time of 3:40.06.
The men's team had a trio of runners post IC4A qualifying marks in the 200m, as sophomore Adrian Vaughn won the event in a time of 21.61, and was followed by senior Ja-Vell Bullard in third (21.74) and senior Nick Vaughn in fourth (21.87).
Another group of Patriot runners recorded qualifying marks in the 400, as junior David Verburg won the event with a time of 46.76, followed by Bullard in second (47.65), Nick Vaugh in third (47.89) and Adrian Vaughn in fifth (48.10).
The Patriots had two other individual qualifiers on the mens side, including freshman Alex Levine finishing fifth in the 1000m run with a time fo 2:27.74 and senior Andrew McGreal taking 10th in the mile run, crossing the line in 4:14.54.
Also posting an IC4A qualifying mark was the 4x400m relay team of Adrian Vaughn, Nick Vaughn, junior George Empty and Verburg, winning the event in 3:10.76.
Mason returns to action next Sunday, hosting the Mason Last Chance meet. Events are slated to start at 10:00 am.
