FAIRFAX, Va. - The Hofstra Pride swept the George Mason
women's volleyball team in CAA action on Friday evening at The RAC. Hofstra won
with set scores of 25-15, 25-18, 25-19.
With the win, Hofstra improved to 17-13 overall and 5-6 in
the conference, while Mason dropped to 5-19 and 3-8 in the CAA.
The Pride hit a hot .319 for the match and also added 14
blocks, compared to the Patriots hitting just .152 with six blocks.
Hofstra led the entire way in the first set, and took
control for good with the match score at 6-5 by using a 6-0 run. The Pride
maintained the lead the rest of the way and extended it to as many as eight points
to cruise to the 25-15 win.
The second set saw Mason battle to an 8-8 draw in the early
going and remain within one point until 12-11 when Hofstra used another big
run, this time a 5-0, to jump out to a 17-11 advantage and hold off the
Patriots en route to the 25-18 set victory.
Mason came out fighting in the third set and assumed an
early 6-5 lead. Junior Lana Zonjic registered five of the Patriots' six points,
including four kills and a service ace. However, Hofstra tied the match on the
next point off a Mason service error and took the lead for good on a Mason
attack error to win the set, 25-19.
Zonjic led the Patriots with 15 kills, while classmate Tori
Price dished out a game-high 32 assists. Defensively, freshman Bernetta Moore
had a game-high 13 digs and Lolade Owokoniran had three blocks. For the Pride,
Kelsie Wills contributed a game-high 16 kills, and Catalina Charry had 27
assists.
The Patriots play their final match of the season tomorrow
evening against Northeastern at 6:00 p.m. It's senior night, and Lauren
Goodell, Danielle Cook and Ran Yin will be honored in a pre-match ceremony.
